Mild to moderate loose skin on the belly can be tightened without surgery. Radiofrequency treatments such as XERF heat the tissue under the skin so the body makes new collagen, and the American Academy of Dermatology says non invasive tightening works on skin just about anywhere on the body. A lot of extra skin, or separated stomach muscles, calls for surgery instead. This guide explains how to tell which group you are in, what XERF involves, and what it costs.
Why belly skin gets loose
The skin over the stomach stretches more than almost anywhere else on the body, and it does not always spring back. The Mayo Clinic lists the common reasons for loose skin, extra fat or weak connective tissue in the abdomen:
- Large changes in weight, up or down.
- Pregnancy, including more than one.
- Abdominal surgery, such as a C section.
- Aging, as the skin makes less collagen.
- Your natural body type.
The cause matters less than the amount. Soft, crepey skin and a fold of skin that hangs are different problems with different answers.

What creams and healthy habits can do
Firming lotions are the first thing most people try. The American Academy of Dermatology is direct about them: the results are subtle at best, and you may see none. A good moisturizer can plump the skin for a while, and a product with a retinoid such as retinol may make a small change because it helps the body make collagen.
Habits matter more for what comes next. The AAD says you are likely to get the best results from any skin tightening procedure if you:
- Are at a healthy weight and keep it steady.
- Eat a healthy diet and drink little alcohol.
- Do not smoke.
- Protect your skin from the sun and never tan indoors.
- Have a small amount of sagging skin to begin with.
A cream cannot lift sagging skin.
The American Academy of Dermatology says dermatologists consider it not possible for a cream or lotion to lift sagging skin, because it cannot penetrate deeply enough. Any instant effect usually comes from moisturizing, and it fades unless you keep applying the product.
How XERF tightens skin on the stomach
XERF skin tightening at Skin Anthology is available for the face and the body. It delivers controlled radiofrequency energy beneath the skin while protecting the surface, which starts the body’s own repair response and encourages new collagen and elastin. Over the following months the skin can look firmer.
Skin Anthology describes XERF as a treatment for mild to moderate laxity, crepiness and early changes in skin quality. Settings are adjusted to the treatment area and to how much laxity there is, so a belly treatment is planned differently from a face treatment.
It is also a treatment for the skin itself. It does not remove a fold of excess skin, and it does not bring separated stomach muscles back together. For those, see the section on surgery below.

XERF runs two radio frequencies at once.
According to Skin Anthology, XERF uses two simultaneous frequencies, 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz, rather than one. That lets a single session treat several depths of the skin, and settings can be personalized for the face or the body.
What a XERF body treatment is like
Before. Avoid excessive sun and sunburn on the area. Some exfoliants, retinoids and other active products may need a short pause, and you share your medications, supplements, recent procedures and medical history with your provider. Prescription medicines are only changed under medical supervision.
During. The energy is delivered beneath the skin. Treatment is generally well tolerated, and most people feel warmth and temporary sensitivity while it is applied.
After. XERF needs no downtime. The skin may look slightly pink or feel warm for a few hours. Your provider may ask you to skip excessive heat, strenuous exercise and aggressive skin care for a short time, and daily broad spectrum SPF is encouraged on any treated skin that sees the sun.
Results. Some tightening can be felt right away, and Skin Anthology says improvement builds over about 2 to 3 months as new collagen forms. The AAD adds that results from radiofrequency can last 2 to 3 years with the right skin care.
The same treatment is used on the face and neck: the guide to tightening loose skin under the chin shows how it is planned there, and the non surgical skin tightening guide compares XERF with the other options.
When surgery is the better answer
Skin tightening has limits, and the AAD says so plainly: if you have a lot of sagging skin, skin tightening may not be helpful. That is the point where a surgical opinion is worth having.
The Mayo Clinic explains that a tummy tuck removes loose, excess skin and fat, can repair separated abdominal muscles, and may remove stretch marks and extra skin in the lower abdomen below the belly button. It is a larger commitment: many people go back to work in about 2 to 4 weeks, and an abdominal binder is often worn for about 6 to 8 weeks.
Mayo also suggests keeping a stable weight for at least 6 to 12 months before a tummy tuck, and notes that a surgeon may advise against it if you plan to lose a lot of weight or become pregnant in future.
| Option | Suits | Downtime |
|---|---|---|
| Firming cream | Subtle, if any | None |
| XERF | Mild to moderate | None |
| Tummy tuck | Excess skin | Weeks |

A belly bulge is not always loose skin.
The Mayo Clinic explains that the stomach can bulge because the abdominal muscles have separated, a condition called rectus diastasis that may also cause low back pain. A tummy tuck can repair it. Tightening the skin over it cannot, which is why your provider looks at the shape of the abdomen, not only the skin.
What belly skin tightening costs
On the current Skin Anthology price list, XERF for the body starts at $1,500 a treatment. The exact price depends on the area and your plan, and is confirmed before you book.
The consultation is free. Your provider looks at how much laxity you have, whether XERF is likely to help, and whether a surgical opinion would serve you better, then gives you the full price.
