You can have laser hair removal after a tan, just not while the tan is fresh. Skin Anthology asks patients to avoid sun, tanning beds, spray tans and self tanner for at least 2 weeks before each session, then to protect the treated skin afterwards. The reason is pigment: the laser aims at the color in the hair, and a tan adds color to the skin around it. This guide covers the timing, the aftercare and how to plan a series around sunny months.
Why a tan matters to the laser
According to Mayo Clinic, the laser targets melanin, the pigment in the hair. The light turns into heat, which damages the hair follicle and slows future growth. The Skin Anthology laser hair removal page describes the same process, with the surrounding skin kept cool and protected during treatment.
Mayo Clinic adds that the treatment is most effective when there is a clear contrast between hair color and skin color. A tan darkens the skin, so for as long as it lasts, that contrast is smaller than it is at your usual skin tone.
Sun timing also affects safety. Mayo Clinic notes that the risk of the treated skin darkening or lightening is higher in people who do not avoid sun exposure before or after treatment. That is why the sun rules on this page apply to every session in a series, not just the first one.

A spray tan counts, even with no sun involved.
Skin Anthology puts spray tans and self tanner in the same 2 week window as the sun and tanning beds. Mayo Clinic and the American Academy of Dermatology both list sunless tanning products among the things to avoid before treatment.
How long to wait after a tan
The Skin Anthology rule is at least 2 weeks without sun, tanning beds, spray tans or self tanner before each session. Treat that as a minimum, not a countdown. If your skin still looks darker than its usual tone when the date arrives, mention it when you check in.
The AAD lists a recent tan among the things to tell your provider before laser hair removal, alongside a tendency to scar and certain medicines.
| Habit | When | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Sun, tanning beds | 2 weeks before | Avoid |
| Spray tan, self tanner | 2 weeks before | Avoid |
| Shaving | Within 24 hours | Shave |
| Waxing, plucking, threading | Before and between | Avoid |
| Heat, hard exercise | 24 to 48 hours after | Avoid |
| Sunscreen | Every day | Use |

Planning a series around sunny months
Laser hair removal is a series, not a single visit. Skin Anthology recommends about 6 to 8 sessions for long term reduction, with facial areas treated every 4 to 6 weeks and body areas such as the underarms, bikini, arms, legs and back every 6 to 8 weeks.
That adds up. A body series of 6 sessions spaced 6 weeks apart already runs about seven months from first visit to last, and longer series run close to a year. Mayo Clinic advises protecting treated areas from the sun for six weeks after treatment and between sessions, or as directed. With body sessions 6 to 8 weeks apart, that covers most of the series.
A few habits make the plan easier to keep:
- Look at your calendar first. A beach trip inside the 2 weeks before a session means moving it, so book around known travel.
- Start with covered areas if summer is close. The bikini line, underarms and back are easier to keep out of the sun than the face, arms or lower legs.
- Keep sunscreen in the routine. The service page asks for a broad spectrum sunscreen every day during the series.
Sunscreen is part of the treatment plan.
Mayo Clinic advises a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. The AAD adds that it should be water resistant and applied every day before going outdoors.
What can happen if you treat over a tan
Most reactions are mild redness or warmth that resolves within hours. The concern with tanned skin is pigment. Mayo Clinic says the treated skin may darken or lighten, that these changes are usually temporary but can be lasting in rare cases, and that the risk is higher in people who do not avoid sun before or after treatment. Uncommon side effects include blistering, crusting, scarring and changes in skin texture.
For the full picture, see the guide to laser hair removal side effects. If a dark mark does appear, the guide to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation treatment explains how those marks are approached. Contact the clinic about any reaction that worries you rather than waiting for your next session.

Darker skin is not the same as a tan
A tan and a naturally deeper skin tone are two different questions. Mayo Clinic says laser hair removal can be used on people with black or brown skin when an experienced healthcare professional chooses the right type of laser and the right settings, which helps protect the skin while treating the hair.
Skin Anthology treats all skin tones, with settings matched to your skin and hair at the consultation and adjusted throughout the session. Your natural tone is something your provider plans around. A fresh tan is a temporary change on top of it, and that change is what the 2 week rule is there to avoid.
What to tell your provider
Before your first session, share:
- Recent sun or tanning, including spray tans, self tanner and sunbeds.
- Medicines, hormonal therapies and supplements. The AAD specifically mentions isotretinoin and aspirin.
- Skin history, such as a tendency to scar, keloids, cold sores, skin sensitivities or recent skin treatments.
Do not stop a prescribed medication unless the clinician who prescribed it advises you to.

Your first visit is a free consultation.
The Skin Anthology consultation is complimentary. Your provider reviews your skin, hair and history, recommends a schedule and gives you the price before you commit, so a recent tan can be planned around before your first session.
